A Guide to Prepare for NDIS Plan Reviews

What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a healthcare program by the Australian government that provides funds for people with disabilities. It was legislated in 2013 and started operating in 2020. This scheme works to make life easier for those living with a significant or permanent disability. Anyone between the age of 7 to 65 with a permanent impairment that is the source of a physical, mental, or behavioural disability is eligible for this program. This service provides funds for all the needs related to an individual’s disability, including transportation, assistive technology, assistance in daily life activities, living arrangement, coordination, finding a job, etc.

What is an NDIS Plan?

The NDIS provides its participants with a plan that includes funding they have received and the participant’s goals for their life. The participants can use the funds to purchase anything they need to achieve their goals. Every participant has a different plan according to their needs and goals.

When the duration of your plan nears the end, the NDIS contacts you to arrange a plan review meeting where they take a look at your progress and the goals you were looking to achieve. You can also decide if you want to renew your NDIS plan or not. These meetings can take place in-person or over video calls, and you can choose to bring someone along for support.

In this plan review, you discuss what worked for you and what didn’t. You will discuss the goals you had set for yourself and whether you achieved them or not. You can also change your goals if they have changed. The future of your NDIS plan is also discussed. You can change the way your funding is managed and determine whether you still need an NDIS plan.

You might not have time to review everything in your plan so having the assessments made by your service providers are helpful to determine whether you’ve made progress towards your goals and if they’ve helped you get there. Your plan is reviewed every 12 months, but participants with stable conditions can go up to 3 years without getting their plan checked because they don’t need frequent changes and have clear goals which they can work diligently towards.

Benefits of an NDIS Plan Review

  1. It helps you become more aware of your present condition and reflect on the past year.
  2. It encourages you to do better than the previous plan.
  3. It helps you identify the things that didn’t help you and allows you to make changes.
  4. It also reminds you of the progress you have made so far.
The National Disability Insurance Scheme arranges these plan review meetings depending on the participant’s disability. Still, it is ideal to organise a plan review at least once in 12 months to make changes accordingly and set new goals for yourself that will help you lead an even better life.
